 In 1996 the St Katherine Region was declared a natural park. There are 317 plants, 115 of them of medicinal value, which are very strong and concentated as there is very little rainfall. The area is home to 40 kinds of butterflies, including the smallest in the world, the Baton Blue butterfly (half an inch in size). South Sinai houses about 300 archeological sites the oldest 30 000 years old. There are many acacia trees which provide shade for people and food for animals. Amongst the local fauna are gazelle, rock hyrax, ibex, foxes and lizards
